(1821–1905)
   Association Founder.
   Williams was born in Dulverton, Somerset, and he earned his living as a draper. He is remembered as the founder of the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) which grew out of his prayer meetings in London. His idea was to win young men to the Christian way of life by encouraging them to share wholesome leisure activities. Today there are YMCA hostels and leisure centres throughout the world and the organisation has done extensive work among prisoners-of-war as well as providing a variety of leadership courses. There is a parallel organisation for women, the YWCA. Williams was knighted in recognition of his work.
